Rotator Cuff Tears Repair Surgery

The rotator cuff is a group of tendons in the shoulder that allow for a greater range of motion. When tears occur to these tendons from injury or use, it is called a rotator cuff tear. Many athletes experience this injury from strain when reaching or moving their arm and shoulder, but rotator cuff tears are shoulder injuries that are also common in older adults from regular use. Dr. Kerisimasi Reynolds offers effective treatments for torn rotator cuffs, including surgery.

When tears occur to the tendons in the shoulder or rotator cuff, it can impact comfort and mobility. Common symptoms of a torn rotator cuff include pain, stiffness, swelling and loss of mobility in the arm and shoulder. Those with rotator cuff tears may experience a crackling noise or feeling when they move their shoulder or arm in certain positions. The arm and shoulder may seem weak and be tender to the touch.

Diagnosis of rotator cuff tears can be accomplished with a physical examination, x-rays and MRIs. In less severe cases, conservative treatment may be recommended, including rest, using a sling, steroid or anti-inflammatory injections and physical therapy. When this treatment is ineffective, or the tears are more severe, surgery may be the best option.

Surgical Treatments for Torn Rotator Cuff

Both open surgery and arthroscopy can be used to repair rotator cuff tears. The goal is to increase space for the tendons and repair or reattach tendons as needed. Dr. Reynolds specializes in arthroscopy and prefers to use minimally-invasive surgery and treatments whenever possible to reduce risk and improve recovery for his patients.
